Towerborne

Towerborne is a side-scrolling action role-playing game (ARPG) with rich brawler combat, loot progression, customizable characters, and co-operative play. It was developed by Stoic Studio (known for The Banner Saga series) and published by Xbox Game Studios. After an early access period, the full game launched on February 26, 2026 for Windows (PC), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.

Setting & Story

The game takes place in a post-apocalyptic fantasy world known as the City of Numbers, overrun by corrupted spirits and monstrous threats. Humanity’s last hope is the massive tower called the Belfry, a safe haven and central hub. Players control an immortal warrior known as an “Ace” — reborn from mystical forces to defend the Belfry and reclaim lost lands.

Side-scrolling brawler combat – Fast and combo-driven battles inspired by classic beat ’em ups but with modern RPG depth.

Classes & Customisation

Players choose and switch between distinct classes (such as Rockbreaker, Shadowstriker, Sentinel, etc.), each with unique weapons, playstyles, and abilities. Class choice shapes how you approach combat and exploration, and you can unlock gear, stats, and skills to tailor your Ace’s build.

World Exploration

Rather than a single flat map, the game’s overworld is hex-based: exploring new hexes unlocks new missions, enemies, and regions to conquer. Progress is tied to both story and open exploration.

Single-player & Co-op

Towerborne supports both solo play and co-operative multiplayer (up to four players), with difficulty scaling based on how many players are present. You can enjoy the experience alone or team up online with friends.
Some community discussions highlight that the game’s combat loop and progression remain fun both in solo and co-op, though group play can shift how difficulty feels.

Progression & Loot

Loot and gear systems are central: powerful weapons and armor alter playstyle and combat effectiveness.
Progression comes from leveling classes, unlocking abilities, and acquiring increasingly stronger gear.

When it exited early access with its full 1.0 launch on Feb 26, 2026, it transitioned from its intended free-to-play, always-online model into a premium buy-once experience that supports both offline play and optional online co-op — with all cosmetic items now unlocked through gameplay rather than microtransactions.
