Description
Here’s a detailed breakdown of Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord – War Sails: what it is, what’s new, and how it changes the game.
⚓ What is War Sails
War Sails is the first official expansion (DLC) for Bannerlord — developed and published by TaleWorlds Entertainment.
It adds full-fledged naval gameplay to Bannerlord: ships, fleets, sea battles, and a whole new Northern region with an all-new faction.
The expansion officially launched on November 26, 2025, for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S — alongside a major free update to the base game.
🚢 What’s New — Key Features & Gameplay Changes
Here’s what War Sails adds to Bannerlord:
Naval Warfare & Ships
You can now command and customize fleets: there are ~18 different types of ships, each with unique handling affected by realistic wind and water physics.
Naval battles: fight enemy ships — you can ram them, block them, board them for close-quarters combat, attack from afar, cripple hulls/oars/sails, or sink them altogether.
Customization: equip ships with siege engines, rams, upgraded sails, cargo holds. It’s possible to capture enemy vessels and take over as prize ships.
Naval campaign & blockades: you can use your fleet strategically — for raids, invasions, sieges (blockading ports), or to control trade/sea lanes.
New Faction & Northern Region
The expansion introduces a new Viking-inspired faction — the Nords — with their own lands in the northern part of the map: icy fjords, coastal settlements, islands, and seas.
With the Nords come new cultural/visual customization — new hairstyles, tattoos, armors/weapons, banners — plus new maritime-oriented troops (mariners) and companions.
Expanded World & Naval-Integrated Map
The world map of Bannerlord’s Calradia expands: new northern seas, islands, rivers, coastal zones — facilitating sea travel, naval battles, river battles, port raids, and maritime trade/transport.
The expansion also brings a new questline introducing naval mechanics: sailing, ship-command, and a pirate-conflict storyline that eases you into the new systems.
