Description

I.G.I.-2: Covert Strike is a tactical first-person shooter developed by Innerloop Studios and published by Codemasters. It is the sequel to Project I.G.I. and follows former SAS soldier David Jones as he carries out covert missions involving espionage, infiltration, sabotage, and international security threats.

Overview

I.G.I.-2: Covert Strike is known for its stealth-focused gameplay, large mission areas, realistic weapons, and tactical approach. Unlike fast arcade shooters, the game encourages careful planning, silent movement, and smart use of equipment. Players must infiltrate enemy bases, avoid alarms, complete objectives, and escape without being overwhelmed.

Story

The story follows David Jones, an elite operative working with the Institute for Geotactical Intelligence. His mission begins with stolen technology and soon expands into a larger global threat involving rogue military forces, secret weapons, and dangerous conspiracies. Along the way, Jones must travel across different countries and stop enemies before their plans become catastrophic.

Gameplay

The gameplay combines first-person shooting with stealth, reconnaissance, and mission planning. Players use binoculars, maps, suppressed weapons, cameras, and gadgets to study enemy positions before attacking or sneaking past them.

  • First-person tactical shooter gameplay
  • Large open mission environments
  • Stealth, infiltration, and sabotage objectives
  • Realistic weapons and military equipment
  • Use of maps, binoculars, and gadgets
  • Single-player campaign and multiplayer support

Stealth and Tactics

Stealth is one of the most important parts of I.G.I.-2. Players can avoid patrols, disable cameras, use suppressed weapons, and plan routes carefully. Raising an alarm can make missions much harder, so patience and observation are often more useful than direct gunfights.

Mission Design

The game features large outdoor and indoor mission areas where players often have multiple ways to approach objectives. Missions may involve stealing documents, destroying equipment, rescuing allies, planting explosives, or escaping guarded facilities. This open structure gives players more freedom than many linear shooters of its time.

Weapons and Equipment

I.G.I.-2 includes a wide selection of weapons, including pistols, assault rifles, sniper rifles, submachine guns, explosives, and suppressed firearms. Equipment such as thermal imaging, binoculars, security tools, and mission maps helps players gather information and choose the best approach.

Characters

  • David Jones – The main protagonist and covert operative.
  • Rebecca Anya – Jones’ mission handler and intelligence support.
  • Robert Quest – A major figure connected to the game’s conflict.
  • Phillip White – An important character involved in the story’s wider conspiracy.

Multiplayer

I.G.I.-2 introduced multiplayer support, allowing players to compete in team-based tactical matches. The multiplayer mode focused on objectives and military-style combat, adding replay value beyond the single-player campaign.

Visual Style and Atmosphere

The game uses a grounded military style with large bases, snowy landscapes, forests, deserts, and industrial locations. Its atmosphere is serious and tactical, focusing on covert operations rather than cinematic explosions or arcade action.
